Yesterday, Anna and Amy went to University of Edinburgh to see legendary gender historian Joan W Scott receive her honorary degree from the university and present a lecture about gender and politics based on her new book Sex and Secularism. #genderhistory wouldn’t be where it is without Joan W Scott and we were delighted to be able to listen to her lecture and meet her!
Jenny d'Hericourt (1809–1875), was a French feminist activist, writer, and a physician-midwife. Her ideas on citizenship and reproduction and their relation to 19th century feminist discourse are discussed in Jessica’s paper in our recent issue! You can access it through the link in our bio. #history #genderhistory #frenchhistory #feminism
Anna, Amy, and Corinne spoke with Braw Bleather today on Subcityradio to discuss gender history, the first edition of Engendering the Past, 'New Interpretations' and their own research. Here is a shot from the 1973 East German film, 'Die Legende von Paul und Paula.' The film offers insight into ideas of normative sexuality in East Germany. The film was popular but quickly banned in East Germany owing to the film's embrace of explicit language and music. The film relates to Anna's research on the degree to which women in East Germany could enjoy sexual freedom in an otherwise restrictive society. ••• You can read about it in Anna’s article in the current issue - just click on the link in the bio 👍🏻 #history #GenderHistory

#thecollective ••• Amber graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College with a B.A. in History. Her coursework focused on British history and her senior capstone essay looked at the historiography of Elizabeth I. Amber then continued on to complete a Master of Library and Information Science from Kent State University in 2017 having focused on the management of libraries. Amber has worked in the libraries and archives of several institutions, including the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Western Reserve Historical Society, and Case Western Reserve University – a top-ranked research university in Cleveland’s University Circle. Amber is currently pursuing a Master degree in History with an emphasis on the history of medicine at the University of Glasgow. Amber’s research pursuits include the role of women in medicine during the 17th-19th centuries with a keen interest in their use of herbs and magic in healing practices. Her dissertation will be exploring the history of Scottish charmers and their healing and occult rituals while comparing the meaning of “medicine” as it was then with our understanding of medicine today. As co-secretary for Engendering the Past, Amber will endeavor to use her past experiences to help the collective pursue it’s vision. She hopes to bring a unique perspective to the collective with past experience in libraries and user access as well as coming from an area outside of gender history and theory. In her free time, Amber enjoys running, visiting museums, and reading historical fiction books. She also loves collecting tattoos! ••• #engenderingthepast
